Midwest Road Trip Destinations, Part 2: Missouri & Kansas

In an earlier post regarding “Midwestern Road Trip Destinations,” we talked about cool locations for a Midwestern road trip. We listed South Dakota and Michigan, which are pretty far away from home….which got us thinking. While they are all beautiful places, you may not want to commit to a whole day on the road getting there and back. A quick getaway or just a weekend may be all the time you have to enjoy yourself. Here’s a list of a few great places to visit that are just a few hours away from home!

The Kansas Cosmosphere

The Kansas Cosmosphere is located in Hutchinson, Kansas. This museum destination recalls the history of the Space Race and houses the largest collection of Russian space artifacts outside of Moscow. The Cosmosphere is one of only three museums in the world to exhibit spacecrafts flown in all three of the early American space programs: Mercury (Liberty Bell 7,) Gemini, (Gemini 10), and Apollo (Apollo 13).

An American Classic – Driving Route 66

Route 66 is a beloved American highway with a lot of Americana kitsch to view along the trip. It actually starts in Missouri, and you are able to drive from St. Louis, to Springfield, to Joplin and stop at all the historic and fun roadside attractions along the route. Surely a trip worth taking.

Midwest Wine Country

Like fine wine? Then head out to Missouri’s wine country for a road trip! Central Missouri’s wine country has been nationally-recognized and boasts more than 120 local wineries and nine wine trails. Wine Country reaches from August to Hermann to Ste. Genevieve and beyond.

Strataca: The Underground Salt Museum of Kansas

Over 650 feet underground, the Kansas Underground Salt Museum is the center of what used to be an ancient Permian Sea. You’ll find a 6,000-pound salt block that you can touch, and a “Permian Playground,” This museum offers a great representation of prehistoric Earth.
